The story behind the dedication
“For Daisy Weston (and her fairy godmother, Margaret Sawkins, who made this happen!)”
A while ago, an author friend who works with Syrian refugees ran an fundraising auction called Authors4Refugees. I offered a signed pile of books AND the chance to have someone’s name written into my next book, as a character and a dedication. The winning bid was from a wonderful woman called Margaret Sawkins, who wanted to win my offer for her friend’s daughter Daisy. I found out Margaret had bid on many other offers, personally helping raise a lot of money for the cause. Margaret’s generosity was especially wonderful because she was terminally ill at the time. But instead of thinking about her own situation, she was helping others start new lives while hers was quickly fading. We had several e-mail chats, and she was funny and sparky. It was a real privilege to have even briefly known this true fairy godmother!
